Go Beyond Limits at Kings Canyon

Exceed the Limits at Kings Canyon

You may have visited Uluru and walked around Kata Tjuta. You may think you’ve seen it all. But you must include the green jewel in the Red Centre’s crown: Kings Canyon.

The breathtaking 270m deep sandstone gorge is arguably one of the most beautiful places in Australia. A deep green rift in a red landscape… Hidden in Watarrka National Park, three hours north of Uluru, Kings Canyon offers the Creek Trail and the Canyon Trail. The 1.5 km Creek Road is a relatively flat road leading to a lookout point towards the canyon’s centre. Canyon Road, on the other hand, is only for dedicated hikers, as the first 300-400m of it is a steep slope extending to the tip of the canyon. However, the entire path that includes the valley of the Garden of Eden and the distorted cliffs of the Lost City suggests it is worth trying.

Information:

The original guardians of the park are the Luritja people, who are still represented among the three Aboriginal groups living there. Watarrka comes from the name the Luritja people gave to the Umbrella Bush (Australian acacia).

How to go?

Qantas and Virgin Blue operate regular flights to Alice Springs, one of Australia’s largest cities. There are several rest stops on the way to the Canyon, including Jim’s Place on the Stuart Highway, Erldunda, and Mt Ebenezer. Kings Canyon is located in Watarrka National Park, 232 km southwest of Alice Springs.

When to Go?

Be aware that it is always very hot in the summer, however.
