Australia attracts attention with its wide range of educational opportunities for international students and also provides various opportunities for those who want to evaluate their career plans after education. In this context, the “Post-Study Work Visa” (Sub 485), introduced on November 16, 2019, grants international students who have completed their undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral education in Australia the right to work for up to 4 years.
International students can apply for a residency permit under certain conditions after completing their higher education in Australia. Australian residency permits (PR) are evaluated through a points-based system. To apply, students must submit the ‘Expression of Interest’ (EOI) form to the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s SkillSelect migration program. The EOI should include personal information, work experience, English language proficiency, and also assessments of skills related to the candidate’s chosen profession.
This visa type requires the student to have completed at least 2 years (92 weeks) of undergraduate or master’s education in designated regional areas of Australia. To apply for the visa, one must have a degree from an institution registered with CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) (education.gov.au).
There are no restrictions on the field of study for this visa type.
Applicants must be under 50 years of age, meet English language proficiency requirements, and complete the application process without the obligation to assess skills. To qualify for this visa, education in Australia must have been completed within the 6 months prior to this visa application. The visa grants the applicant the freedom to work and travel in Australia upon completion of their education.
This visa type, along with Australia’s regional cities, offers various advantages to international students. Since 2021 (November 2019), international students graduating from regional educational institutions are offered an additional one or two years of visa extension under the existing two-year Post-Study Work stream. For example, despite being the capital of the South Australia state, Adelaide is declared as a regional area, so those who have completed undergraduate or master’s education there can obtain a work permit for 3 years instead of 2. This provides students with economic opportunities and various career options.
